The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is the most prominent humanitarian aid organization on the ground in Gaza, providing necessary services like food and medicine in an area of the world facing an acute crisis. After months of the Israeli government’s military campaign, millions of Palestinians in Gaza have been displaced, food is scarce, children are dying of dehydration, and care providers need medical supplies.
Now, Republicans in Congress are threatening a permanent ban on funding for UNRWA when that funding is needed most. They’re trying to hide this ban in a large government funding bill - a bill that many Republicans won’t be voting for anyway. But this isn’t just about blocking aid. This is part of a coordinated campaign to delegitimize UNRWA and undermine their ability to provide aid at all. People in Gaza are on the brink of starvation, and UNRWA is the organization best positioned to prevent the most dire humanitarian situation in the world from becoming even worse.
