There is no Republican currently in the Senate who has shown an interest in doing what is needed to fix our democracy. So we must move forward by any means necessary--no excuses.
Every single Republican Congressperson and Senator voted against an enormously popular and necessary package. Every Republican voted against survival checks, extended unemployment, and lower healthcare costs. Every Republican voted against funds to keep small businesses open and for states and localities to safely re-open their economies. They don’t care about governing.
We urge the House to quickly pass this package to deliver overdue relief, but must acknowledge that if Democrats had realized the power of their majority and eliminated the filibuster, Americans would be seeing a more robust package that included wage increases, stronger public health protections, and much more.
Bravo to the House Democrats who unified to pass the For the People Act. We celebrate this bold legislation to foster a real democracy. We look forward to similar swift action from the House for D.C. statehood and the John Lewis Voting Right Act.
