Our hearts are breaking for our Muslim friends and neighbors, and our global community. We see you, we love you and we stand shoulder to shoulder with you in the fight for a future without fear. We absolutely must recognize that the motivation for this horror was rooted in Islamophobia and white nationalism, poisons that are actively being spread by elected officials, pundits, and a rising white nationalist movement here in our own country and around the world.
We applaud the New York State Senate and Assembly for their decision to include support for small-donor matching in their one-house budgets. The move signals that the grassroots have been heard, but the negotiation process is just beginning. Now, we will continue our work to ensure that both chambers commit to building a more fair and equitable democratic process by, among other policies, including small-donor matching in the final budget.
Yesterday marked a milestone in our months-long battle to defend democracy in Arizona this session. Since the beginning of the session, Indivisibles packed the committee hearing for HB 2616 and made hundreds of calls to their legislators to fight back against anti-democratic bills including HB 2616. We are thrilled that the Arizona House listened to the will of their constituents and voted against HB 2616.
For too long, the rules of our democracy have been rigged in favor of the wealthy and the white. Today’s passage of H.R. 1 dramatically raises the bar as we continue to work to create a democracy that includes and represents us all.
What the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature did today is an affront to democracy and the will of the people. SB 1188 would purge over 260,000 Arizonans from the early voter rolls and is a deliberate attempt to make it harder for Arizonans to participate in the democratic process. Republicans in the legislature have shown that they want to silence the people’s voice to ensure that only the voices of those already in power are heard.
A historic power grab requires a historic response. Congress has never acted to terminate a national emergency declared by a president, but it is crucial that they do so this time. Make no mistake: this was not an emergency. Instead, this was an illegal, anti-democratic power grab rooted in hate.
A coalition of organizations, including Indivisible, to reform and strengthen U.S. democracy, released the following statement following Trump's declaration of a national emergency to fund his hateful border wall.
Once again, we see Trump responding to defeat with bluster, hate, lies, and threats. His speech alternated between platitudes and thinly-veiled attacks on Congress' authority to investigate and conduct oversight — attacks that Congress must reject. But Trump isn’t the story tonight. The real story is the audience in the room. It’s the 116th Congress that has more women and people of color than ever in its history. It’s about the powerful new voices who will be leading the effort to hold Trump accountable for every one of his abuses.
Trump chose Barr because he knows he would be an attorney general that works for the president and not for the people. As attorney general, Barr will have a stronger post from which he can shield Trump from accountability and carry forward attacks on communities disproportionately at risk. We urge the Senate not to confirm another Trump yes-man.
